The official home page of Kate AlholaMy interests and hobbiesI have many interests and hobbies. Here are mentioned just few of them. Software coding/hackingMy work is also one of my favourite hobbies, my work involves open source in a Finnish/multinational company. I do this work because I like it. I have a long history with computers beginning from Motorola 6800 evaluation KIT 2 back in 1977. After that technology have evolved, but I have evolved with it. I like to keep my knowledge up to date with latest technologies. I have created my own operating system called Katix and I have created some device drivers for Linux as well including a video for Linux drivers for embedded HW. We have Linux related discussion forums running on our server: Linux programming forum, embedded Linux programming forum, GTK-QT-Devel forum and last but not least Katix RTOS forum. Music and home theaterWe have a home theater room in our house. Because of the acoustic treatment done to the room, it is very good for watching movies from DVD and listening to music. The room reverberation time is very short and therefore the room is most suitable for multichannel content, two channel content might be considered to sound too dry. With the dedicated home theater PC, it is possible to both enjoy movies and listen to music most conveniently and with very high fidelity. In addition to the HTPC (which is located to another room to minimize the noise) we have a DVD player with DVD+/-RW recording capability, video projector, 8.1 loudspeaker system built around Yamaha DSP-AX1 home theater amplifier. Sci-fi & FantasyOne of my hobbies is science fiction (Sci-Fi). For example Babylon 5 series is one of my long time favourites because of its strong plot and interesting environment. I also liked The Matrix (all parts, not just the first one). I like fantasy movies as well very much. One of my favourites is the Lord of the Rings sequel. Very much recommended. Cats & dogsWe have four cats and a dog in our household. Environment friendly technologiesI am particularly interested in technologies that help us to be more friendly to the environment. As a member of the Green Party and owner of two electric cars, I try to do my task to help the environment in everyday life. Flight simulationWe have both latest MS Flight Simulator 2004 and the very nice X-plane V8.x system which has very accurate aerodynamic modelling based on the real shape of the airplane / its model instead of just a rought approximation that is being used in the MS Flight Simulator. We run the X-plane on a Linux machine as a new version of the X-plane supports now also Linux and Windows is no longer needed to run it. Flying
I fly several aircraft types, both PPL and ultralight (/microlight/LSA): TL-96 Star, Ikarus C42, Eurostar EV-97, Cessna 152, Cessna 172, Cessna 172TDI, Diamond DA-40D.
